From Struggle to Ease: Dr. Andrew V. Abela’s Path to a Fulfilling Life through Superhabits

Superhabits: The Universal System for a Successful Life by Dr. Andrew V. Abela is a powerful, thought-provoking book that resonates deeply with the struggles we face in modern life. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with short-term solutions and quick fixes, Dr. Abela offers something truly revolutionary - a return to the foundational habits that have shaped human civilization for centuries. As someone who has often felt the strain of modern life’s complexities, this book felt like a breath of fresh air, a reminder that the pursuit of a successful and meaningful life doesn’t need to be overwhelming.

One of the first things that struck me about Superhabits is how Dr. Abela frames the concept of success. He doesn’t present success as an elusive goal that only a few can attain, nor does he suggest it requires extraordinary effort or talent. Instead, he asserts that success is attainable for anyone who commits to steady daily practice—something that is within reach for all of us. His message is refreshing in its simplicity: our lives are governed by the habits we cultivate, and these habits, when chosen and practiced deliberately, have the power to transform every aspect of our existence.

Dr. Abela brings ancient wisdom to the forefront, rediscovering the system of "super habits" that once governed the lives of great thinkers and civilizations. Drawing from a variety of sources, including philosophy, psychology, and education, he reminds us of the habits that guided people through history’s greatest achievements. In a time when we often feel disconnected from our roots, this book bridges the gap between the wisdom of the past and the empirical research of the present. For me, it was a wake-up call to reconnect with principles that are timeless, yet all too often overlooked.

"A rich blend of social science and ancient wisdom, Andrew Abela’s Super Habits shows how strengthening our virtues leads to well-being. This beautiful book is a must-read for anyone in pursuit of the better life." - Arthur C. Brooks, Harvard Professor and #1 New York Times bestselling author

What makes Superhabits stand out is its holistic approach. Dr. Abela doesn’t just focus on one area of life, such as career success or personal happiness. Instead, he weaves together physical, mental, and emotional well-being, showing how these super habits impact all facets of our lives. He argues that by developing these habits, we can create a foundation of ease and strength, leading to a life that is not only more successful but also more joyful. I found this integration incredibly valuable—often, self-help books focus narrowly on one area, leaving the reader to figure out how to balance the rest. Here, Dr. Abela presents a cohesive system that, when followed, naturally leads to balance.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is how Dr. Abela debunks the myth that developing good habits is difficult. He emphasizes that habits, by their very nature, make life easier. Once a behavior becomes habitual, it requires less mental energy, freeing us to focus on more important things. This idea was eye-opening for me. Often, when we think of self-improvement, we imagine a life filled with constant effort and struggle. But Dr. Abela makes a strong case that by developing the right habits, we can reduce the effort required to live well. As someone who has tried to incorporate new habits in my own life, this was an encouraging reminder that the hardest part is simply getting started—once a habit is in place, it requires much less energy to maintain.

One of the key messages in Superhabits is the importance of virtue. Dr. Abela draws on the teachings of a thirteenth-century philosopher-monk (presumably St. Thomas Aquinas, though the book doesn’t specify) to show how virtue can be cultivated through daily habits. This idea that virtue is not something we either have or don’t have, but rather something we develop over time through practice, is both empowering and liberating. Dr. Abela breaks down the steps to attaining virtue in a way that feels accessible to everyone. He demystifies the process, showing that it’s not about making grand gestures or achieving superhuman feats, but rather about committing to small, daily actions that align with our values.

“This highly engaging and practical book provides sustenance for the soul. Melding wisdom drawn from philosophers, sages, and scientists with page turning stories of everyday people overcoming extraordinary odds, Superhabits is a guidebook for all of us to grow and thrive in fulfilling our life’s purpose.” - Kathleen McLaughlin, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, Walmart Inc., and President, Walmart Foundation

Another aspect of the book that I found particularly insightful was Dr. Abela’s discussion of the long-term versus short-term mindset. In today’s world, we are often driven by instant gratification. We seek out quick solutions that provide immediate relief but rarely offer lasting fulfillment. Dr. Abela contrasts this with the lasting joy that comes from developing super habits, which provide deep, enduring satisfaction. He explains that while the rewards of these habits may not be immediate, they are far more meaningful and long-lasting. This resonated with me deeply—I’ve often found myself caught in cycles of chasing short-term wins, only to feel empty afterward. The idea that super habits lead to a more profound and lasting sense of joy was a compelling reason to invest in them.

The effects of super habits on mental, physical, and emotional health are also covered extensively. Dr. Abela explains how these habits contribute to overall well-being, creating a positive feedback loop where each habit reinforces the others. For example, the habit of regular physical exercise doesn’t just improve physical health; it also boosts mental clarity and emotional resilience. Similarly, cultivating mindfulness helps manage stress, which in turn improves our relationships and work performance. This interconnectedness was a key takeaway for me—by focusing on one area, we inadvertently improve others, making the practice of these habits feel less daunting and more rewarding.

What I appreciated most about Superhabits was its practical nature. Dr. Abela doesn’t just offer theoretical insights; he provides actionable steps for implementing these habits in our daily lives. The book includes exercises, reflection prompts, and tips for overcoming common obstacles. I found these tools incredibly useful in thinking about how to apply the principles in my own life. It’s one thing to read about the importance of habits, but quite another to put them into practice. Dr. Abela makes this process feel manageable and even enjoyable.

In conclusion, Superhabits is a profound and practical guide for anyone looking to live a more successful, joyful, and balanced life. Dr. Abela’s message is clear: success doesn’t require a superhuman effort; it requires consistency, intentionality, and a commitment to developing habits that serve us well. This book has inspired me to re-evaluate my own habits and consider how I can cultivate a life of greater ease and purpose. I would highly recommend it to anyone who feels overwhelmed by modern life and is searching for a system that provides both immediate relief and long-term fulfillment.
